MUSIC EXPLAINER

What is drum & bass?

Drum & bass is high-speed breakbeat music — fast, chopped drums around 170 BPM over deep sub-bass, ranging from frenetic to surprisingly serene.

Drum & bass grew out of the UK rave scene in the early 1990s, built on fast, intricately chopped breakbeats (around 160–175 BPM) laid over heavy sub-bass. The drums move fast, but the bassline and overall feel often sit at half-time, giving the music its distinctive fast-yet-rolling quality.

Its calmer branch — 'liquid' drum & bass — pairs those rolling breaks with lush pads, jazzy chords and soulful melodies, and it's a genuinely great high-energy focus tool. The rapid percussion keeps the mind alert while the smooth harmonic bed stays out of the way, a favorite for gaming, workouts and energetic coding.

Fast on the surface, smooth underneath — liquid DnB is proof that 'high tempo' and 'relaxing' aren't opposites.
